Note to President Trump
President Trump: If you want to bring this pandemic to a screeching halt, stimulate the face mask industry and have everyone wear a facemask when not at home. It's that simple. It will work, the evidence supports it. How much more do people have to suffer? How much more damage do we allow to happen?
For WWII we banned together and produce small and monstrous mechanisms of war in unfathomable short order. Couldn't we also manufacture billions of facemasks in a short period of time? They just have to be basic.
Whether your theory is the virus is transmitted from surfaces only (debunked theory) or surfaces and the air (substantiated theory) - or surfaces, air and food (most likely), everyone wearing facemasks in addition to handwashing/sanitization will end this crisis. Sick people (people with symptoms) staying home, all the handwashing/sanitizing - and even all the social distancing will not stop the spread - has not.
Add facemask wearing; done!
When I look at people in the food industry with their gloves and hairnets, I cannot help but wonder, "Do they have it and if so are the infected microscopic droplets in their breath falling on my food?" Unfortunately, yes, that can spread it. It doesn't take many viruses to not make it down my throat to cause respiratory infection, just like it doesn't take many if we touch an infected surface then touch our lips, nose or eyes.
But the doctors say it cannot happen. "There are no cases proving the spread of the virus through food." Of course not dumbass, stop looking at it in the way of typical foodborne illnesses. This is different - the same format as touching an infected surface with your fingers and touching your lips, eyes or nose. Just like there wasn't anything proving mere breathing into the air spreads it at first. Common sense physics tells a different story than what we've been hearing.
Now a new study did show these little buggers to be taking cruises into the air around us on our breath, then hanging in the air for a while. Do we have to wait for a study of the food modality too?
Remember, the density of the virus in an infected person before symptoms appear is 1000s of times more than the flu during the flu's entire course. "But they're so small and go right through facemasks, they say." Not if they're coming off your breath. Your breath is moist and the facemask absorbs moisture, and thanks to the surface tension of water, the virus follows. Once it's in the air, however, though they'll eventually fall, facemasks may not stop them if the air is dry.
Then again, facemasks can slow their travel through the mask. After all, they'd still have to have enough momentum to make it through the molecular maze of a facemask. It's not like they have legs and arms and can crawl through it on their own.
Trump, America, listen carefully. Here's a shocker: we haven't done all the studies possible on every possible idea, event, thing or circumstance possible, and certainly not in 3 months. So the status quo will fail - has failed. it's time for new thinking, such as some riskless, proverbial coloring outside the lines thinking -- such as having America wear facemasks.
Regarding spreading it on food, we have heard doctors cite evidence that the virus can live on a perfectly clean (and dry) metallic surface for several days and so scrub those surfaces. So do you think a virus could then live on the robust and textured surfaces of food for say a few minutes or hours?
The answer President Trump: we all wear masks every minute were are out and about until no new cases have appeared for a minimal amount of time (probably a couple of months). Wouldn't that be better and easier tolerated by Americans than shutting down the country, forcing us all to stay inside even for a short time? And then our culture should change such that if we suspect we might be contagious even though we don't feel sick, we wear a mask.
If we would have done this from the beginning - despite the paternalism and dogmatic advice, and it was as effective as the evidence suggests, at shortening the life of this pandemic, how much better might our economy be and how many fewer unemployed people would there be? How much less in debt and interest owed? How fewer dead?
Just saying...
